How to personalise your email with CXP merge tags

After reading this article you'll know what CXP merge tags are and how to use them to personalise your email campaigns with data from a CXP segment.

What are CXP merge tags?

CXP merge tags (also known as personalisation fields) allow you to insert data from your CXP segment directly into your email campaigns. For example, you can greet a subscriber by their first name, or include a personalised link. Merge tags can be used in your email design, subject line, preview text, and text version.

Steps

Step 1: Create a CXP email campaign

Navigate to Email Campaigns and create a new campaign. Select CXP as the campaign type.

Step 2: Link the campaign to a CXP segment

Select the CXP segment you want to send to. The merge tags available in the next step will be based on the profile properties in this segment.

Step 3: Add CXP merge tags to your email

Open your email design and place your cursor in a text element where you want to insert personalised content. Click the Insert merge tag button. A popup will appear showing all available merge fields from your CXP segment — select the one you want to use (for example, CDP.FirstName for a subscriber's first name).

You can also use merge tags in your subject line and preview text: simply start typing {{ and a popup with all available merge fields will appear.

Step 4: Save the campaign

Once you've finished adding merge tags and editing your design, save the campaign before proceeding.

Step 5: Do a test send

Always send a test email before sending to your full segment. This lets you verify that merge tags resolve correctly and the email renders as expected.

Step 6: Send the campaign

When you're satisfied with the result, send the campaign to your CXP segment. Each recipient will receive a personalised version of the email with their own data filled in.
