Bring Your Own Carrier (BYOC)

Bring Your Own Carrier (BYOC) lets you use CM.com's Voice products, such as HALO, Native Voice, FlowBuilder, and other Voice products, without porting your phone number to CM.com. You keep your number with your existing telecom provider, and calls are forwarded to a BYOC gateway hosted by CM.com. This is useful if you're contractually tied to your current carrier, or don't want to move your number.

Concept

With BYOC, your existing telecom provider forwards inbound calls for your number to a CM.com BYOC gateway over SIP. Once a call reaches the CM.com Voice platform, the number can be configured to use any CM.com Voice product, exactly as if it were a regular CM.com number.

BYOC only covers inbound call delivery. Your number, and your relationship with your existing provider, are unaffected: the number is not ported to CM.com.

Getting started

There is currently no self-service option to set up BYOC. It requires configuration on our side. To get started, contact [email protected].

We'll need from you:

  • The IP address(es) and port(s) your telecom provider uses to send calls, so we can allow-list them

  • The phone number(s) you want to configure for BYOC

We'll provide you with:

  • A username and password for digest authentication

  • The platform address for your region (see table below)

Once you have these, complete the setup on your side:

  1. Configure digest authentication on your telecom provider's side, using the credentials we provided.

  2. Configure your phone number with your telecom provider to route/forward calls to your CM.com BYOC address.

  3. Configure the Voice product you want to use (HALO, Native Voice, FlowBuilder, etc.) on the number, via the Voice Management app.

Self-service management of BYOC endpoints, credentials, and numbers is planned for the Voice Management app. Until it's available, any changes to your BYOC setup go through [email protected].

Authentication

BYOC requires both of the following to be configured together:

  • IP allow-listing: the IP address(es) your telecom provider uses to send calls must be allow-listed by CM.com.

  • Digest authentication: your telecom provider must authenticate using the username and password we provide.

Calls are only accepted when both checks pass. Failing authentication 3 times results in a 15-minute ban for that source.

Which products support BYOC?

A BYOC number can be used with various CM.com products, including:

Once your BYOC number is set up, you configure it for a Voice product the same way you would any other number.

FAQ

Can I use BYOC for outbound calling as well?

No. BYOC covers inbound call delivery only, on a number that stays with your existing telecom provider. For outbound calling, see SIP Trunking.

Do I still need to submit a number request or porting request?

No. Since your number stays with your current provider, the standard Numbers and porting process doesn't apply to BYOC numbers.

What happens if my telecom provider's IP address changes?

Contact [email protected] so we can update the allow-list. Calls from an IP that isn't allow-listed will be rejected.

Is there a limit on concurrent calls (CC) or calls per second (CPS) for BYOC?

Yes, CPS and CC limits are set per BYOC account. If you need additional capacity, contact [email protected].

Will I be able to manage BYOC myself in the future?

Yes. We're building a self-service page in the Voice Management app where you'll be able to manage your BYOC endpoints, credentials, and numbers directly. Until then, all changes go through [email protected].
