Ticketing - Difference between access keys and Discount code/Discount campaigns

This knowledge agent provides guidance about the Promotions module within the Ticketing platform, specifically explaining the difference between Discount Campaigns and Access Keys, and how they are used.

Within Ticketing → Promotions, users can manage promotional logic that affects either ticket pricing or ticket access. The module contains two promotion types: Discount Campaigns and Access Keys. Although both are configured in the Promotions section, they serve different purposes.

Discount Campaigns

Discount Campaigns are used to apply price reductions during checkout. Event organizers can create a discount code (for example EARLYBIRD10 or PARTNER20) that customers can enter during the purchase process.

When the correct code is entered at checkout, the system applies the configured discount to the order or to specific ticket types. Discount campaigns therefore influence how much the customer pays, but they do not control ticket visibility.

Users can configure discount campaigns by defining:

  • the discount type (percentage or fixed amount)

  • which tickets or products the discount applies to

  • validity periods

  • usage limits

  • whether the campaign is active or inactive

Discount campaigns are commonly used for early bird promotions, marketing campaigns, partner discounts, or limited-time offers.

Access Keys

Access Keys are used to control access to specific tickets or ticket shops rather than changing the ticket price.

An access key acts as a code that unlocks restricted ticket availability. When a shop or ticket selection is protected by an access key, customers must enter the correct key before they can see or purchase the tickets connected to that campaign.

Without the correct access key, those tickets remain hidden and cannot be accessed in the ticket shop.

Event organizers can create Access Key campaigns and link one or multiple ticket types to the campaign. The access key then functions as a gate to a restricted sales flow, allowing only users with the code to access the linked tickets.

Access keys are commonly used for:

  • pre-sales

  • VIP or partner access

  • private ticket sales

  • member-only events

  • invitation-based ticket access

Key Difference

The main difference between the two promotion types is their purpose:

  • Discount Campaigns control ticket pricing by applying discounts during checkout.

  • Access Keys control ticket visibility and access, allowing only users with a specific code to view or purchase certain tickets.

Both features are configured in the Promotions section of the Ticketing platform, but they influence different parts of the ticket purchase flow.

This agent helps users understand when to use Discount Campaigns versus Access Keys, how they affect ticket availability or pricing, and how they can be used to support marketing campaigns, private sales strategies, and controlled ticket distribution.
