Fonts in Email Campaigns

The aim of this article is to inform customers about the use of fonts in email campaigns and the limitations associated with them.

Understanding the use of fonts in email

Fonts play a crucial role in email campaigns, enhancing the overall design, branding, and readability of your message. However, due to compatibility issues across different email clients, not all fonts can be used. Here's why:

  1. Email Client Compatibility
Email clients such as Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail, and Yahoo Mail render emails differently. While some email clients, like Apple Mail and iOS Mail, support custom web fonts, others, such as Gmail and Outlook, often do not.

  2. Web Fonts vs. System Fonts

    • Web Fonts: These fonts are hosted online (e.g., Google Fonts, Adobe Fonts) and require the email client to fetch them from an external source. Unfortunately, not all email clients support this functionality.

    • System Fonts: These fonts are pre-installed on the recipient's device (e.g., Arial, Times New Roman, Verdana) and are universally supported because they don’t rely on external hosting.

  3. Security Restrictions
Some email clients block external resources, such as web fonts, for security reasons. When this happens, the email client defaults to a fallback font.

  4. User Experience
If a custom font isn’t supported, the email client will display a fallback font. A drastically different fallback font can negatively impact the email’s design and readability, potentially affecting the user experience.

The use of custom fonts in email campaigns is limited by the email client, as it must support the font to display it correctly. If a font is not compatible, the email client will automatically select a fallback font, which may alter the intended design and readability of your message.

Available Fonts in the Email Campaigns app

Due to limitations on the email client side, we’ve restricted the fonts available in the Email Campaigns application to ensure compatibility. This approach prevents fonts from defaulting to drastically different fallback options, which could alter your email design. By using the supported fonts, you can maintain the intended look and feel of your campaign across all email clients.

Below is the list of fonts available in the Email Campaigns application:

  • Global Font

  • Arial

  • Courier New

  • Georgia

  • Helvetica Neue

  • Lucida Sans

  • Tahoma

  • Times New Roman

  • Trebuchet MS

  • Verdana

  • ヒラギノ角ゴ Pro W3

  • メイリオ

  • Bitter

  • Droid Serif

  • Lato

  • Open Sans

  • Roboto

  • Source Sans Pro

  • Montserrat

  • Ubuntu

  • Open Sans Extra Bold

  • Overpass

These widely supported fonts ensure greater control over how your email is displayed, preventing fallback to very different fonts and maintaining the integrity of your design.
